About

My name is Pam Fairfield and I am currently attending University of British Columbia, taking my Master Of Library Information Science. This blog has been created for the purpose of LIBR 500 Foundations of Information Technologies in order to learn about Web 2.0 tools used in libraries throughout North America. In my former life, before becoming a Cyborg–that is a library student–I was a theatrical costume creator, (interning and later working at the Stratford Festival, then traveling and working at theaters throughout Canada), an author, an English Major, a fashion designer, a social advocate for people of the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver and a Curator for the Interurban Gallery in Vancouver. I am a soon-to-be-librarian, that is, sort-of-soon, in approximately 1.5 years, 9 days and 12 hours. I have a passion for art and for children and hope to somehow merge these two compelling worlds within the field of librarianship. I have two undergraduate degrees: one is a BFA in Costume Studies from Dalhousie University; the other is a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in English with minor studies in Communications and Fine Arts. Throughout the core program of my master’s degree, I have become intrigued with the new Web 2.0 tools that seem to have exploded all over the Web, sporting an extremely high usage rate, particularly that of the Blog, as a tool for communication. I am interested in the fact that many institutions – libraries, universities, galleries – now use the blog as a tool for communication, idea exchange, information exchange, social networking and the sharing of websites, images, videos, in short, anything multimedia. I am impressed with the interactivity of the blog and the potential of particular blog mangers to create virtual spaces where multiple forms of media can be shared for free. I will explore the social aspect of the blog as well as its information sharing capacity in a sampling of English speaking libraries throughout North America.

  1. Hey again Pam,
Just had to tell you I LOVE you “about” posting. When I read your description of yourself as “an author, an English major, a fashion designer, a social advocate” I thought its NO WONDER we get along so well! I must say you have a terrific blog!

  2. Pam,
This is an amazing blog overall. The design, content and writing quality are all exceptional. The links are unique and informative, and I especially like how accessible the site is. It’s very user friendly, which is unusual. I was also particularly interested in your comments aboout the Yale site. As a person with a love of libraries and poetry, I will be returning to this site often and plan to recommend it to others.
